Horseshoe Basin Waterton, AB August 2015

This year the Leavitt Ladies rode the Horseshoe Basin Loop located in Waterton Lakes National Park. As you can see it is a 20.8 km ride round trip. We went left and returned on the right! A nice day for a ride except for the smoke. There were a lot of forest fires in our area this year. Three in Montana on Logans Pass, One in Waterton on the big lake and several in BC and Saskatchewan that for some reason sent their smoke our way to Southern Alberta.

We are parked by the Buffalo Paddock and Colynda is posing before she gets her horse. Notice the haze in the background. Smoke! That is Vimy mountain behind her, and there is only a hint of that mountain.

Shauna is getting ready to head up the mountain. Those last minute calls to make sure everything is as it should be.

Marilee and Tiffys Luckywrangler! I really like this picture as I sold Tiffy (the nice grey mare Marilee is riding) this fall and I'm glad I have such a nice photo of this great mare! I also think Marilee looks good too! They both look like they are having fun!

Here is the whole group before we head up the mountain.
From left to right: Hailey Sommerfeldt Duce, Colynda Duce, Cyndy Zemp, Hali Leishman, Marilee Cahoon, Dixie Bevans and Shauna Smith is taking the picture.

A fun picture of Shauna as we head up the mountain.

Just a picture of the haze from all the smoke. This is looking south toward Waterton townsite.

Looking north toward the mountain we are going to climb.

As we are going up. Notice the switchbacks involved.

Climbing, Climbing!

Just about to the top!

At the top! Too bad we can't see anything from up here! This is looking north, we should be able to see Twin Butte and Pincher Creek from here, but not this year!
Getting off for a bit of a break and as Marilee asks: "Do you guys feel a little somethin' somethin' riding this trail?" This trail was steep enough and high enough for Marilee. I would say that this was a bit out of her comfort zone, but she did very well. She trusted her horse to take care of her. Tiffy is calm and sure footed!

Marilee at the Top!

Hali at the Top!

Shauna at the Top!

Hailey Duce at the Top!

Cyndy and Colynda at the Top!

Dixie and Zee Last Wrangler at the Top!
(Just for the record, I really like this picture!)

Heading down now!

I am on my horse above these guys! We are heading down to the trail that you can see at the base of the mountain. A steep ride down for sure! The heads of the girls are level with the trail we are aiming for.

Effort at photography. I wanted the flowers to be brighter.

Now we are having fun on the trail! It's not steep and oh so very nice to ride.

I love the mountains, the horses and the great friends!

Cool shot!

Another great ride!

  1. Oh yes, much more relaxing going down! Cute shot of Shauna behind her horse. I wonder if I would have been less apprehensive if the weather was clear or maybe way more nervous. It was just quite the ride for me, but fun and adventuresome.
